Two days are enough to see the town on foot; with three or four you can add Auroville, the beaches and a trip to Mahabalipuram. It is one of the calmest and easiest cities to explore in south India, ideal for slowing down.
What to see in Puducherry: top sights
Seafront promenade (Goubert Avenue)

A promenade of more than a kilometre above a rocky beach, between the old lighthouse, the French war memorial and the Gandhi statue. At sunrise and in the late afternoon it fills with locals walking, jogging or just watching the sea.
Recommended time: 1 h
Tip: It closes to traffic in the evening, when it is at its liveliest. The sea here is not for swimming: for that, head to the beaches outside town.
The French Quarter (White Town)

The old colonial town between the canal and the sea: quiet streets of white and yellow houses with wooden shutters, bougainvillea and iron gates. Many are now cafés, boutiques and guesthouses with courtyards.
Recommended time: 2–3 h
Tip: Explore on foot or by bike early in the morning, with good light and less heat. Rue Romain Rolland and the area around Our Lady of Angels church are among the prettiest.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram

The spiritual centre founded around the philosopher Sri Aurobindo and Mirra Alfassa, “the Mother”. In the courtyard, under a frangipani tree, is the samadhi where both rest, covered in flowers and surrounded by people meditating in silence.
Recommended time: 30 min
Tip: Complete silence is expected, photos are not allowed and it opens in the morning and afternoon, with a midday break.
Basilica of the Sacred Heart

A neo-Gothic church from the early 20th century, with a red-and-white façade and stained glass brought from France depicting the life of Christ. It is one of the city’s most recognisable sights.
Recommended time: 30 min
Manakula Vinayagar Temple

A temple to Ganesha that predates the French and is much loved locally, with murals telling the god’s life and a golden doorway. Devotees make offerings at any hour.
Recommended time: 30 min
Tip: Take your shoes off at the entrance and dress modestly. Visit at dusk, when the atmosphere is liveliest.
Auroville and the Matrimandir

An experimental township founded in 1968 on the idea of people from all over the world living together regardless of nationality or belief. At its centre is the Matrimandir, a huge golden sphere surrounded by gardens, devoted to concentration and silence.
Recommended time: Half a day
Tip: Start at the visitor centre, about 12 km from Puducherry: that is where you collect the pass for the Matrimandir viewpoint. Entry to the inner meditation chamber must be booked in advance.

A golden-sand beach south of the city reached by boat from Chunnambar boat house, crossing a backwater lined with mangroves. It is Puducherry’s most beautiful beach and the best for a full day.
Recommended time: Half a day
Tip: Go early: by mid-morning the groups arrive and there is a queue for the boats. Bring water and sun protection, as there is little shade.
Serenity Beach

North of town, towards Auroville, a relaxed beach with cafés and several surf schools, good for learning on small waves. Calmer than the promenade, with fine sunsets.
Recommended time: 2–3 h
Tip: The sea can have currents: swim carefully and, if you surf, go with a school.
